💡Inspiration
Our campus, Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) in Chennai, is spread out over an area of 661 acres and is residential, comprising faculty and staff residences, academic complexes, and hostels (student dormitories). IITM is located adjacent to the Guindy National Park (GNP), which is unique for its rich biodiversity. The abundant and diverse flora, with 298 observed species, provides an ideal habitat for its equally diverse fauna, including 35 species such as the endangered blackbuck. As an ecological island outside protected areas, maintaining a green campus and contributing to carbon neutrality is a natural interest and social responsibility for the IITM community.
Recognizing the importance of sustainability and technological innovation, the goal is to promote a more sustainable and efficient environment, fostering a community that is both academically enriching and ecologically conscious.

While it’s generally understood that the green dustbin is for biodegradable waste and the blue dustbin is for non-biodegradable waste, which is recycled and reused, students may occasionally encounter items that are difficult to categorize. The Eco Sort feature is invaluable in these situations, helping to correctly classify waste.
